Senate Adjourns Plenary Session In Honour Of Late Senator Chukwumerije

The senate on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 postponed a plenary session in their bid to honour their late member, Senator Uche Chukwumerije.

It is the culture of the senate to honour deceased members by postponing all items on the order paper at the first plenary after the person’s death.

Senator Chukwumerije passed on at the age of 75, on Sunday, April 19, 2015 after losing the battle to cancer of the lungs in a Turkish hospital located at Abuja.

Until his death, Chukwumerije was the Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, in the current Seventh Senate where he also represented Abia North.

The head of the senate requested for an adjournment immediately after the chamber was ready for the plenary session.

The motion for adjournment was seconded by the opposition Minority Leader, while the Senate President called for voice vote from members and subsequently approved the adjournment till the next legislative day.

This practice has formed part of their tradition in the house to enable them grieve over the death of their late member and colleague.
