Some soldiers and a team of policemen on Thursday, June 25, 2015 engaged in a serious battle over alleged assault on policeman in Aba, Abia State.
The soldiers of the Forward Operation Base of the 144 Battalion, stationed at Ngwa High School, were said to had confronted a MOPOL officer, who was riding on a motorcycle, on why he wore a camouflage, which they claimed was not meant for the police.
Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that the soldiers, not satisfied with the response of the policeman, attempted to pull off the camouflage, but the police officer sprayed tear gas on the soldiers and a fight ensued.
It was further gathered that the policeman, attached to the MOPOL 55, in the same area gathered his colleagues from his base and headed to Ngwa High School where they engaged the soldiers in a serious gun duel.
One of the police officers was said to have sustained gunshot injuries following the brawl which according to an anonymous soldier was stirred after the policeman failed to properly identify himself.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public relations Officer, Onyeke Ezekiel, said the injured policeman was receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital, adding that investigation has been launched into to uncover the events that surrounded the melee.
