ISEYIN, Nigeria – A 41-year-old manager of SEAP Micro-Finance Bank Saki, Sola Ogungbe, has reportedly taken his own life at his residence in Iseyin, Oyo State, due to a loan default crisis.

Ogungbe had granted loans to a number of customers who later defaulted in repayment, leading to escalating work-related stress.

After being absent from work due to the crisis, one of his staff members called his wife on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, expressing concerns about his wellbeing.

On her return home to discuss the matter with her husband, she discovered Ogungbe’s lifeless body.

A close friend of the deceased, who requested anonymity, voiced regret over Ogungbe’s tragic decision and emphasized the importance of open dialogue in times of crisis.

“The issue of suicide is becoming alarming. Sola made a grave mistake by taking his own life because of debt. If he had shared this issue with his friends, maybe somebody could have come to his aid,” the friend said.

“Everyone is going through one thing or the other, but our survival is anchored upon communal living and friendship. We need to tell people about our issues, as we never know who may be able to help.”

Ogungbe’s remains have been transported to his hometown of Omu-Aran in Kwara State for burial.
