Scarcity Of Chicken Looms In Edo As Heavy Duty Truck Crushes 8,000 Fowls To Death

Scarcity of chicken may hit Benin City, the ancient capital town of Edo State, as over 8,000 poultry birds were crushed to death along the Ugbowo axis of the Benin-Lagos road in the state, Leadership reports.

The ugly incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, December 22, 2014 when a driver of heavy duty truck accidentally crushed the chickens along the busy Benin-Ore-Lagos Expressway.

The driver reportedly slept off having travelled all through the night and in the process of sleeping, he lost control of his steering and ran into a ditch.

One female trader who witnessed the incident and identified as Ms. Amenze, said that the truck rammed into a ditch and somersaulted and crashed into the poultry birds in the process at the popular Adolor Juncture in Egor Local Government Area of the state.

Although no life was lost to the accident, the driver of the truck reportedly sustained some injuries.

Meanwhile, chickens were sold as high as N4,000 each as at Monday, December 22, 2014  in markets where they are available within Benin.
