ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Navy has issued a public warning about fraudulent recruitment advertisements for its Direct Short Service Commission, DSSC, circulating online.
The high command has cautioned Nigerians to ignore these false enlistment opportunities.
Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, spokesman for the Nigerian Navy, on Monday, September 11, 2023, sounded the alarm on the deceptive advertisements.
He emphasized that the Navy had not announced any recruitment drive for its DSSC program.
“The attention of the Naval Headquarters has been drawn to a fraudulent online advertisement on the enlistment exercise for Direct Short Service Commission into the Nigerian Navy,” Ayo-Vaughan stated.
He added that the scam website even included a detailed application portal and information on what purportedly would be the upcoming recruitment phases.
The spurious advertisement directed potential applicants to a website claiming to be the official portal for the Nigerian Navy’s DSSC Recruitment for 2023.
The fake portal touted that detailed application guidelines and requirements were provided, effectively luring unsuspecting individuals to log in.
Ayo-Vaughan further clarified the Navy’s official stance: “It is important to note that the Nigerian Navy did not announce any DSSC Enlistment Exercise, neither is the service conducting any form of enlistment for the officer cadre.”
The Navy usually makes announcements about official recruitment exercises through its legitimate website and verified media platforms.
“For avoidance of doubt, we will usually notify the public through our official website www.nigeriannavy.mil.ng and other credible, verifiable platforms, including mainstream media,” the Commodore affirmed.
Members of the public, especially those looking to join the Navy, have been strongly advised to verify information from official sources to avoid falling victim to online scams.
As online fraudulent activities continue to be a grave concern in Nigeria, this latest development shows that even trusted institutions like the Nigerian Navy are not immune to impersonation and scams.
The high command’s prompt action to dispel the fraudulent information highlights the urgent need for increased digital literacy and skepticism, especially concerning sensitive matters like employment opportunities.
