Craig Jones became trapped inside the lift with a friend between the fourth and fifth floor of a block of flats in Bolton, Manchester, on Saturday, August 30, 2014 afternoon.
When an emergency button failed to work, the pair prised the doors open and attempted to climb out.
But despite the friend safely climbing out onto the top of the lift and then escaping onto the fifth floor – Mr Jones fell.
He was taken to Salford Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Mr Jones, who worked as a plasterer, is believed to have lived in the flat at Marsden Road for several years.
A parking attendant who recognised the victim said: ‘I’ve heard that one of the lads managed to get free, but the other one didn’t and fell. I only saw him last week.
‘He was a nice lad, I only saw him recently. His friends looked gutted when I saw them. I’m gutted for them.
Police, fire crews and paramedics attended the scene at 4.50pm on Saturday, August 30, 2014.
There are believed to be bno suspicious circumstances but the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is investigating.
