Serena Williams’ hopes of a calendar grand slam was dashed on Thursday by Italian, Roberta Vinci. Vinci who is ranked number 43 in world female tennis beat Serena 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the US Open semi-final which took place in New York on Friday.
Serena had beat her elder sister, Venus in the quarter-final but this time around luck turned its back on her. The American’s dream of completing a clean sweep of all four majors in 2015 will no longer be a reality as a result of that loss to Vinci.
In what will be an all-Italian final, Roberta Vinci will match up against Flavia Pennetta at Flushing Meadows on Saturday.
