Rights Group to New Ministers: “Adhere to the Constitution and Serve the People”

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, called the recently inaugurated ministers to work diligently and in strict compliance with Nigeria’s constitution.

The rights group issued a particularly stern warning to the new Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mr. Nyesom Wike, urging him to govern with “absolute respect to the constitution.”

In a statement released on Monday, August 21, 2023, and signed by the national Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA emphasized, “The Minister must desist from thinking that he is a dictator of Abuja.”

Drawing attention to Mr. Wike’s prior comments regarding demolishing illegal structures, HURIWA cautioned against actions that might suggest political vendetta or abuse of office, as such acts contravene section 15(5) of the Nigerian constitution.

The group highlighted the distinction between a Minister’s role and that of a Governor, stating that Ministers are “servants of the people.”

The extensive media statement titled “Agenda for Ministers” detailed a comprehensive list of recommendations and warnings for each ministerial role:

  • HURIWA expressed concerns over the size of the cabinet, pointing to economic constraints and emphasizing the need for efficiency and accountability.
  • The rights group highlighted the importance of adherence to the manifesto of President Bola Tinubu and the developmental blueprint of the All Progressives Congress.
  • Special attention was given to the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, urging respect for the judiciary and the cessation of any abuses or disregard for court orders.
  • The association stressed the importance of human rights provisions and emphasized the need for ministries, especially those related to environment and petroleum, to prioritize sustainable and environmentally-friendly policies.
  • The Minister of Water Resources was reminded of the significant portion of the Nigerian population without access to clean water, emphasizing the need for action against open defecation.
  • The FCT Minister received counsel to prioritize housing and transportation within Abuja.
  • The Minister of Women Affairs was urged to take stringent measures against child exploitation and trafficking, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP.
  • Infrastructure, especially the state of federal roads, was also highlighted, focusing on the South East and South South regions of Nigeria.

Concluding their sweeping advisory, HURIWA stated that “the ministers must never be caught getting involved in contracts scam and procurement corruption.”

The statement stands as a testament to civil society’s active role in Nigeria’s political landscape, continuously holding leaders accountable for their actions and reminding them of their sworn duties to the nation.
