The Yobe State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has described as grossly inadequate the monthly take home of the state’s retired civil servants as some of them are still collecting five thousand naira monthly.
Muktari Musa Tarbutu, the NLC state chairman, gave the indication in the spirit of the 2021 edition of Workers’ Day celebration held on 1st May.
Tarbutu also said that the monthly 100 million naira disbursement for the payment of retirees’ gratuity is inadequate and that will lead to spillover on a monthly basis.
“More so, the monthly take-home pension is inadequate as it is on record that we have pensioners that are collecting only N5,000 as pension monthly.
“In view of the above, on behalf of the entire pensioners of Yobe state, the Congress enjoined the government to implement the harmonised 33% pension increase in the state”, he urged.
The Chairman Yobe State NLC equally demanded the implementation of teachers’ promotion in the state for effective teaching and learning.
“Letters of 10 years promotion from 2010 to date were still laying in SUBEB and not released to beneficiaries disputes executive circular on prompt promotion, implementation and annual increment for teachers”, Tarbutu said.
According to the chairman implementing teachers’ promotion is crucial in this time of emergency on education, hence said if rightfully addressed will go a long way in achieving the desired result.
He, however, called on the Yobe State Government to prioritize the effects of COVID-19 pandemic, social and economic crisis: challenges for jobs, social protection, people’s welfare in line with the theme of this year’s workers’ day.
