The remains of two mummified babies have been found inside small boxes above ceiling tiles at a funeral home in northwestern Indiana, USA who were placed there by an employee last fall and taken down the same day by the manager of the facility.
The funeral home disclosed that the employee, who worked there for eight months, was fired. and before he was fired, a manager had found him stowing the remains of a stillborn and a 1-month-old in the ceiling in September of 2014. The funeral home says they contacted the coroner then, but it was not until this week that the coroner came out to investigate.
The babies had been kept in the morgue since in the 1990s under previous funeral home owners, they were unclaimed until the employee apparently decided to move them, the funeral home said.
The spokesperson for the funeral home says they had secured the remains and contacted the Lake County coroner right away. Since then, they have been searching through records to find any next of kin.
On Wednesday, March 4, 2015 the coroner removed the remains from the funeral home and found no injuries to the bodies.
However, a criminal investigation has been opened and no other bodies were found.
“We don’t know where these bodies came from, how long they’ve been there, nothing,” Gary police Sgt. Thomas Decanter said.
Autopsies are scheduled for Friday, March 6, 2015.
