Must read

BENIN CITY, Nigeria – In an expected political shift, Philip Shaibu, recently reinstated as the Deputy Governor of Edo State by the Federal High Court in Abuja, has left the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and rejoined the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Shaibu’s return to the APC on Saturday, July 20, 2024, in Benin, the state capital, was marked by a significant show of support and a symbolic gesture reminiscent of the Biblical prodigal son.

Arriving at the venue around 2:08 pm, Shaibu walked straight to kneel before former Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole, receiving wide applause from party supporters.

This act underscored his commitment to his return and the support he garners within the APC.

Speaking at the event, Shaibu stated, “On behalf of the Legacy Group, I announce our movement to the APC. We have come to add value to the party. It is time to take back our state. We will not talk too much because action will speak for us. We are not afraid. We are ready to move forward.”

Shaibu emphasised the readiness of his group to contribute to the party’s success in the upcoming elections.

“We, the homeboys, are ready to take our state back through the APC governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo, and his running mate, Dennis Idahosa. We are not troublemakers, but if it comes, we will use it to rub our body, and we move on,” he said.

In a message posted on his X handle, Shaibu expressed his joy at returning to the APC.

“It is a triumphant homecoming for me, as I officially return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party where I am accepted, valued, and welcomed with open arms. The party holds a special place in my heart, and where I have shared countless memories. I am grateful to be back among the people and community that have always supported me, and to reunite with my political family.”

Shaibu’s return to the APC, accompanied by prominent members of the Dan Orbih-led Legacy Group of the PDP, signifies a major political realignment in Edo State. His move is expected to bolster the APC’s efforts in the upcoming governorship election, positioning the party for a stronger contest.

TheNiche had reported that the Federal High Court in Abuja reinstated Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State on Wednesday, a decision that set the stage for his dramatic return to his former party.

The political landscape in Edo State continues to evolve, with Shaibu’s return to the APC marking a significant development in the state’s political dynamics.
