KANO, Nigeria — An intense fire gutted the personal residence of Abdulahi Ganduje, the outgoing Governor of Kano state, resulting in a significant loss of property and livestock, officials confirmed on Thursday, May 25, 2023.
The fiery blaze took hold on Monday, May 22, 2023, at the governor’s home on Miyangu Street in Nassarawa GRA Kano, the State Fire Service told journalists.
Saminu Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer of the State Fire Service, said that by the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the inferno was already under control. However, substantial damage had already been done.
“The fire started at a place where Ganduje rears cows. Many of the animals died in the inferno, along with other multi-million-naira property being razed down,” an anonymous source disclosed.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, speculation suggests that it originated from a metal welding operation within the house.
At the time of the incident, work was still ongoing to transform the building into a fitting residence for the outgoing governor.
Despite efforts to gain an official statement, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Abba Anwar, declined to comment on the incident.
As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, the extent of the damage done to the outgoing governor’s residence is yet to be fully ascertained.
