Bayelsa indigenes protest ‘invasion’ of state by Nigerian soldiers during the governorship elections over the weekend.
Citizens of the state took to the streets in peaceful protest over the meddling of the Federal Government in the December 5, 2015 elections which was contested by two main candidates, the incumbent, Governor Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Governor Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Some of the placards say, ‘Military stay away from politics’, ‘Elections did not hold at Southern Ijaw’, ‘Buhari, you can’t take Bayelsa’, ‘President Buhari, we don’t want this your change in Bayelsa’, ‘APC, Anti Progressive Congress’.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has this in the afternoon of December 8, 2015 declared the election inconclusive after cancelling the election in Southern Ijaw local government area after reports of violence.
The results of seven local government areas were announced of which Governor Dickson won six of them with his closest opponent, winning only one. Dickson is in a clear lead as at the time of the indefinite suspension of announcement of results.
