ABUJA, Nigeria – A growing number of influential politicians within Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, are reportedly aligning with former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai in a bid to build an alternative political platform ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
The move, which involves several former ministers and senior party figures, could reshape the country’s political landscape as internal tensions continue to plague the APC.
Among those expected to join El-Rufai in the Social Democratic Party, SDP, are former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, and former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu.
Dissatisfaction Fuels Exodus
Sources familiar with the development indicate that these political figures are increasingly disillusioned with the current state of the APC, particularly under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
Many within the party feel sidelined following internal power struggles and are now seeking a new platform to sustain their political relevance.
El-Rufai, a key figure in former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, has been at the centre of speculation regarding a potential presidential bid in 2027.
His alignment with other disgruntled APC members is seen as a strategic step toward solidifying an opposition force capable of challenging both the APC and the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in the next general election.
A Strategic Political Move?
The SDP, which played a significant role in Nigeria’s democratic history during the early 1990s, has recently regained attention as a viable alternative for those seeking to challenge the dominance of the two major parties.
Political analysts suggest that the return of high-profile politicians to the SDP could reinvigorate the party and turn it into a formidable force ahead of 2027.
“This is a major political realignment that could redefine Nigeria’s electoral landscape,” a political analyst based in Abuja said.
“With the level of discontent within the APC, it’s no surprise that key figures are looking for new platforms to pursue their ambitions.”
Growing Divisions Within the APC
The APC has faced growing internal discord since the 2023 elections, with factions emerging over leadership disputes and governance direction.
Several senior members who were once staunch supporters of the Buhari administration now appear to be distancing themselves from the current APC leadership.
While there has been no official statement from the key figures involved, their recent political manoeuvres suggest a shift in allegiance.
Observers say the coming months will be crucial in determining the strength of this emerging coalition and whether it can pose a credible challenge to the APC and PDP in 2027.
Uncertain Political Future
As the 2027 elections approach, questions remain about the ability of El-Rufai and his allies to consolidate support under the SDP.
While their experience and influence within Nigerian politics are undeniable, the challenge of building a national coalition outside the two dominant parties remains significant.
The situation is still unfolding, with further details expected in the coming weeks as negotiations and political alignments continue.
However, one thing is certain: Nigeria’s political scene is on the verge of a potential shake-up, and the coming months will determine how far this new coalition can go in reshaping the country’s leadership landscape.
