ABUJA, Nigeria – In a recent revelation, outgoing Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has announced that he plans to spend six months in his native village, Daura in Katsina State, after officially handing over power to President-elect Bola Tinubu on May 29.
The information came to light in a statement issued by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, following the President’s meeting with the Progressives Governors Forum on Thursday, April 27, 2023.
“President Buhari expressed his intent to return to his roots in Daura, spending half a year there before retiring to Kaduna State,” shared Shehu.
The Progressives Governors Forum, representing governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), congregated at the State House in a meeting led by their Chairman, Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State. The primary objective of their visit was to congratulate President Buhari on the party’s success in the 2023 general elections held on February 25 and March 18.
It’s worth noting that the presidential and National Assembly elections took place on February 25, while the governorship and State Assembly elections were held on March 18.
During the meeting, President Buhari spoke extensively about his retirement plans, indicating his desire to reconnect with his roots by spending substantial time in Daura before settling down in Kaduna.
The meeting was attended by an array of dignitaries, including the governors of Plateau, Imo, Kwara, Kaduna, Ekiti, Cross River, Nasarawa, Kogi, Lagos, Jigawa, Katsina, and Ogun states. Also present were the deputy governors of Gombe, Kano, Ebonyi, and Borno, who attended on behalf of their principals.
