A 10-year-old girl who was raped by her stepfather has allegedly been denied the life-saving abortion she desperately needed, Metro UK reports.
It was learnt that the minor was discovered to be 21 weeks gone into the pregnancy in a hospital in Asunción, Paraguay, where she was rushed after she complained of stomach pains sometime in April 2015.
Amnesty International reports that the girl fell pregnant after her stepfather raped her.
A life-saving abortion which was the best alternative was denied the little girl who was subsequently rather sent to a centre for young mothers.
Abortion is legal in Paraguay, only when the life of the woman or girl involved is endangered by the pregnancy.
The director of the hospital in Asunción has admitted to a glaring fact that the girl was at a risk as a result of the pregnancy.
Her mum requested an abortion formally on Wednesday, April 28, 2015 which was declined by authorities whose reason is yet to be deciphered.
At the age of 10, the bodies of most women are yet to be fully developed to go through the strenuous process of pregnancy and childbirth.
Meanwhile, the child has the right to the life saving abortion due to the risk posed by the pregnancy to her well being and life generally.
