Pope Francis Suffers 2 Episodes of Acute Respiratory Failure, Vatican Confirms

Must read

VATICAN CITY, Rome — Pope Francis experienced two episodes of acute respiratory failure on Monday, the Vatican announced, as the 88-year-old pontiff continues to battle pneumonia.

According to the Vatican statement on Monday, March 3, 2025, the respiratory distress was caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus, which narrowed his airways.

Earlier in the day, doctors performed two bronchoscopies to clear the buildup of secretions.

By the afternoon, Francis was placed on an oxygen mask to assist with his breathing.

Despite the severity of the situation, the Vatican confirmed that the pope remained alert and cooperative throughout the ordeal.

“It was a complicated afternoon,” Vatican sources said, noting that the acute respiratory crisis persisted for part of the afternoon but has since stabilized.

“The accumulation of mucus is a result of the pneumonia, and that causes coughing and spasm as the bronchi try to expel the mucus as it irritates them.”

Health Concerns Persist as Prognosis Remains Uncertain

While the immediate crisis appears to have subsided, the Vatican stated that Francis’ blood tests remain unchanged and his prognosis remains reserved, indicating ongoing concerns about his condition.

The pope has been battling double pneumonia since his hospitalization on February 14.

Despite some earlier signs of improvement, Monday’s respiratory failure represents a serious setback.

Uncertainty Over Upcoming Public Appearances

With key religious events approaching, including Ash Wednesday and Easter, Vatican officials have already made adjustments to the pope’s schedule.

Cardinal Angelo De Donatis has been designated to lead Ash Wednesday services in his place.

The Vatican has not yet announced whether Pope Francis will be able to deliver his traditional Sunday noon blessing, which he has missed for the past two weeks.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
