President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday, March 20, 2015 expresses optimism that he would win the Saturday, March 28, 2015 presidential election, positing that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was the strongest in the country.
President Jonathan stated the above while answering questions in an interview with the British Broadcasting Cooperation (BBC).
When asked of his chances ahead of the polls which will see him go up against his main contender, General Muhammadu Buhari of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), President Jonathan said: “I will surely win it… My party is still the strongest party.”
When quizzed on the threat of insurgency, the counter-insurgency drive and the spate of violence in the country, President Jonathan remarked thus: “I’m very hopeful that it will not take us more than a month to recover the old territories that hitherto have been in [Boko Haram’s] hands.
“We never expected that [Boko Haram] will build up that kind of capacity. We under-rated their external influence. Since after the civil war we’ve not fought any war, we don’t manufacture weapons, so we had to look for help to re-equip our army and the air force.
“Whatever goes wrong, I accept. Whatever goes right, I take the glory.
“Whenever I hear that somebody dies in Nigeria… I feel pain, because they are all Nigerians.”
On the over 200 abducted schoolgirls, President Jonathan said: “We have not seen dead girls, that is the good news. I believe they are still alive, I believe we will get them.”
