The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Abubakar Adamu, has warned members of the public against taking the law into their hands in expressing their grievances.
Adamu gave the warning in Enugu on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 when executive members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Enugu State Chapter, visited him.
The commissioner who was reacting to complaints of nonpayment of salaries by the union said that such actions hindered development in any state.
He advised the union to use dialogue and not confrontation in addressing its problems.
“Always be law abiding in the course of going about issues relating to your grievances and never allow your emotions to control you.
“Dialogue is a civilised way of addressing any vexing issue no matter the magnitude,” Adamu said.
Earlier, the President of NULGE in the state, Mr Kenneth Ugwueze, expressed dismay at the non-payment of salaries and other benefits to the council workers.
Ugwueze said their grievances included non-payment of salaries and leave allowances and the non-remittance of deducted union dues by some local government councils.
The president urged the state government to compel the council chairmen to also make payment of salaries a priority like it did.
“In Enugu State, the former governor made it a priority to pay workers before the 25th of every month, so why can’t the council chairmen do so?’’ he queried.
The president told the commissioner that the members were threatening to use other means to express their grievances.
Ugwueze urged the government to take urgent steps to address the issues.
He thanked the police commissioner for receiving them and promised that the members would be law abiding.
