Former Bolton Wanderers midfielder, Fabrice Muamba has warned Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho about preventing his club’s medical team from rushing on to help an injured player.
Muamba who suffered a cardiac arrest during a football game in March 2012 believes that the consequences of giving medical staff restrictions may be dire in future.
Jose Mourinho slammed his medical team for rushing on to the pitch to help Eden Hazard who appeared injured during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw to Swansea a fortnight ago.
According to Mourinho, Hazard was only tired and didn’t need medical attention. He claimed the duo of team doctor, Eva Carniero and team physio, John Fearnes were ‘impulsive and naive’.
He subsequently banned them from the Chelsea’s bench despite replays showing that the duo were beckoned on by the referee.
Muamba who suffered early retirement after he collapsed during a game against his side, Bolton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspurs in 2012 is of the opinion that players’ health should be prioritized ahead of results.
In an interview with The Sun, the 27-year-old who was revived after his heart stopped for 78 minutes when he collapsed during the match said: ‘Player safety is key, a player’s life is important. Once a player is injured, the doctor and physio both have a duty to come on.
‘That is something that Jose should be able to understand.
‘Health and safety is very important. That’s why you need a clear understanding of what is required.’
