As every new parent knows, the sight of a newborn baby fast asleep in your arms is one of complete bliss.
That is unless you are having a photoshoot and your baby son’s name is Ted.
Ted was being photographed with his 26-year-old father Al Ferguson, from Kent, when he decided to create a picture for his parents to really remember.
The naked boy was sleeping peacefully in his father’s arms, his head lightly cupped in Al’s hand, as photographer Kirsty Grant began to capture the scene.
The boy’s gangly arms and legs dangling from Mr Ferguson’s arms seemed to capture the joy and pride of parenthood so well…
Until little Ted did what babies do best and unleashed his last meal over his doting father. His nakedness offering his dad no protection from the inevitable projectile.
The moment, arguably illustrating parenthood equally as well as the first image, was of course captured by the photographer.
‘It happened within a second,’ Mr Ferguson said. ‘As I felt his stomach tense, in the back of your head you know he’s about to go poo, and then before you know it … he’s doing it.’
The little grin on Ted’s face, the dismay in his father’s and the projectile oozing off his arm on to the shag rug below in the family’s sitting room made too good a picture not to share.
The image was uploaded to BabyCentre UK and Mr Ferguson’s blog The Dad Network and went viral soon afterwards.
‘It’s not the kind of carpet that can be cleaned particularly easily,’ he said.
‘But the photographer did an amazing thing — she reached down for a nappy, picked it up, then went to put it over Ted’s bum to stem the flow. And she still got the shot.’
Meanwhile, Ted’s mother Jen, who was watching as the scene unfolded, couldn’t help but laugh.
