UMUNYA, Nigeria – Tansian University, Umunya, has received a N10 million donation from Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, to support its College of Nursing in Oba.
During his visit to the institution, Obi emphasised the importance of education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation as critical pillars for Nigeria’s development.
Obi, known for his advocacy of human capital development, stated that nations progress by investing in quality education.
He urged Nigerian leaders to prioritise these sectors, describing education as the most effective tool for breaking the cycle of poverty.
While presenting the cheque, Obi commended Tansian University for its commitment to training healthcare professionals.
“Strengthening the healthcare sector begins with equipping institutions with the resources needed to produce skilled professionals who will, in turn, serve society effectively,” he said.
Addressing students, Obi encouraged them to remain focused and diligent, emphasising that a well-educated population is the foundation of a stable and prosperous society.
In his welcome address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eugene Nwadialor expressed deep appreciation for Obi’s continuous support, recalling his previous N100 million donation to the university.
“Your philanthropy has already had a profound impact on our institution, and it is a pleasure to have this opportunity to thank you in person,” Nwadialor said.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the plight of 38 nursing students who had been on Monsignor Johnbosco Akam’s scholarship before his passing, leaving them unable to continue their education.
He appealed to Obi to extend his generosity and support the students in completing their studies.
Nwadialor further invited Obi to be the Special Guest of Honour at the university’s convocation ceremony on 29 March 2025, expressing confidence that his presence would inspire the students and enrich the event.
The visit was attended by staff, students, and dignitaries, who praised Obi’s commitment to education and national development. They acknowledged his transformative impact on the lives of young Nigerians through his continued investment in schools across the country.
As the visit concluded, the university community reaffirmed its gratitude to Obi for his dedication to academic excellence and social progress. They expressed optimism for continued collaboration to further strengthen the institution’s growth and societal impact.
Obi was accompanied by his former commissioners: Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, Prof. Patrick Obi, and Mr. Ndubisi Menakaya.
