AWKA, Nigeria – Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced his determination to become the president of Nigeria, emphasizing that while the goal is certain, he is not in a rush to realize it.
Speaking in Awka, Anambra State on Friday, May 12, 2023, at the launch of his book, “Peter Obi: Many Voices, One Perspective,” Obi underlined the importance of steadfast truthfulness in Nigeria’s journey towards renewal.
“I’ll always insist on what is right,” he stated. “If it’s not today, it will be tomorrow. I’m not in a hurry. I’m not desperate.”
Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, spoke candidly about his experiences in Nigerian politics. He recounted his impeachment as governor and his refusal to compromise his values, even in the face of adversity.
“I won’t give money to do the wrong thing,” he said, adding that he had never sought to influence Mammood Yakubu, the head of INEC. “If he wants to do what is wrong, no problem. One day, this thing we are doing in this country will consume all of us.”
Obi assured his commitment to abide by the judiciary’s decisions, reiterating his dedication to Nigeria’s future. He also expressed his gratitude towards the OBIdient Movement for their understanding and perseverance, endorsing humility and accountability as signs of discipline and responsibility.
“The journey is about building a new Nigeria that must be ready to say sorry, even if they are right,” Obi said. “We need to start thinking about what we are going to do to have a better country.”
Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha and Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, praised Obi’s character and progress, attributing his achievements to divine intervention. “It’s not by his works or by his power,” Achebe said.
The book’s Lead Editor, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, highlighted the integrity of Peter Obi. “We are not saying that Peter Obi is a saint. But he stands out in integrity. Nigeria is richly blessed if this man becomes President,” Okunna said.
She added that proceeds from the book would be directed towards ongoing litigation, expressing hope for a favorable outcome.
