ABUJA, Nigeria — The Labour Party (LP) convened a significant National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, amid ongoing tensions surrounding the party’s leadership crisis following the recent Supreme Court ruling.

The meeting, held at the Transcorp Hilton, was chaired by Nenadi Usman, the former finance minister and current head of the party’s caretaker committee.

In attendance were prominent figures within the party, including Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate; Datti Baba-Ahmed, his running mate; and Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State.

Other notable attendees included governorship candidates Olumide Akpata (Edo State) and Athan Achonu (Imo State), both of whom were present despite recent threats from Julius Abure, the factional national chairman.

Abure had warned of sanctions for Obi and Otti over their involvement in convening the meeting, a move that has escalated the ongoing dispute within the party.

The meeting, which was held less than 48 hours after Abure’s threat, saw significant support from LP lawmakers, including several senators and members of the House of Representatives.

During the session, the NEC passed a vote of confidence in Obi, Baba-Ahmed, Otti, and the Usman-led caretaker committee.

In her opening remarks, Usman urged members of the former National Working Committee (NWC) to set aside their differences and contribute to rebuilding the party.

She also revealed that the party would soon review its recent governorship primaries in Anambra state, following the declaration of George Moghalu as the winner of the primary held in Awka on Saturday, April 5, 2025.

The decision was met with some controversy, but Usman assured that an official statement would be issued shortly.

This latest development highlights the deepening divide within the Labour Party as it navigates the fallout from the Supreme Court’s decision, which has further complicated the leadership structure.
