PDP’s Duoyo Diri Set To Be Sworn In As Bayelsa Governor Following INEC Declaration

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Friday, February 14, 2020 issued a Certificate of Return to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Douye Diri.

INEC earlier declared him as the winner of the November 16 governorship election held in Bayelsa State.

A few minutes after INEC’s pronouncement, Odiri and his deputy arrived at the electoral’s body headquarters in Abuja to receive the Certificate of Return.

The Supreme Court on Thursday sacked the governor-elect of Bayelsa State, David Lyon, and his deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo. They were elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

In a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Ejembi Ekwo, on Thursday, February 13, 2020, the court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Mr. Lyon.

The Apex Court also ordered a fresh certificate be issued to the governorship candidate with the highest votes cast and wide geographical spread in the governorship election held on November 16, 2020.

Mr. Lyon was sacked for presenting a running mate with a fake certificate in the said election.

With this judgment just delivered, Channels TV reports, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Diri Duoye with the highest lawful votes and with wide geographical spread will eventually become the next governor of Bayelsa.
