The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared George Sekibo, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the winner of the legislative rerun election in Rivers East Senatorial District.
Oji Ekumankama, returning officer of the election, announced this at Council Hall in the state’s capital of Port Harcourt on Monday, December 12, 2016.
Sekibo polled 93,098 votes to defeat Andrew Uchendu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who got 34,193 votes.
A few hours later, Osinachukwu Ideozu, candidate of the PDP, was also declared the winner of the Rivers West Senatorial District legislative poll.
Ideozu got 107,166 votes and defeated his APC rival, Otelemaba Amachree, who polled 48,898 votes.
Magnus Abe, of the APC, was declared winner of the legislative rerun election in Rivers South East Senatorial District on Sunday.
There has been a lot of drama associated with announcing the results of the election in the Rivers South East district. INEC officials walked out of the collation centre, leaving the returning officer alone with APC party agents. Journalists and all other party agents also walked out of the collation centre when the INEC official left.
Returning Magnus Abe to the Nigerian senate was a do-or-die project for embattled transportation minister, Rotimi Amaechi who is reportedly priming Abe to contest against Governor Nyesom Wike in 2019.
Governor Nyesom Wike on Sunday, called on INEC to release the Rivers East Senatorial District and Rivers West Senatorial District declaring that the PDP candidates have already won both elections based on results from polling units .
Governor Wike also called on INEC to immediately release the results of Andoni /Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency and Andoni State Constituency also won by the PDP.
