JALINGO, Nigeria – Victor Kona, a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Taraba State, passed away in the early hours of Sunday in Abuja after a brief illness.
His death has been described as a “painful” and “irreparable” loss by political peers and followers.
Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State confirmed the death through his media aide, Emmanuel Bello.
In a press statement on Sunday, August 27, 2023, Bello said, “We didn’t only lose a political icon but a father and a consummate family man. Hon. Victor Bala Kona’s place in our history is assured and will always be respected. His death came when his wealth of experience and knowledge would be most needed.”
The Governor extended his “heartfelt condolences to his family and all of us left to mourn this disturbing and irreparable loss.”
Andeta’rang Irammae, the Public Relations Officer of the PDP in the state, also issued a press statement expressing sorrow over the former Chairman’s death.

“His loss at this time of our political journey is sad and colossal as the government and party that he had assiduously worked for would have continued to benefit from his fountain of wisdom and knowledge,” said Irammae.
Victor Kona served as Chairman of the PDP from March 2012 to August 2020.
During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to maintain the party’s leadership streak in the state.
Notably, Kona handed over to Governor Kefas as Chairman of the PDP before resigning to run for the governorship, which he won under the party’s platform.
His death leaves a void in the political landscape of Taraba State at a time when his extensive experience and wisdom were considered invaluable.
Plans for memorial and funeral services are pending.
