Ayo Fayose, the Ekiti State governor, said on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 that he was placed under house arrest by security operatives at the Old President Lodge of the Government House in Port Harcourt Rivers State.
The vocal opposition figure said that the actions of the security agencies, on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari prevented him from attending the national convention of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP which held that day in Port Harcourt.
Fayose, who spoke through his media aide, Mr. Lere Olayinka, expressed sadness over the development.
The governor, who was conspicuously absent at the convention that eventually held at the Rivers State PDP secretariat, said an Armoured Personnel Carrier was used to block the lodge where he was a guest.
The Rivers State police commissioner, Francis Odesanya, however, said such an issue had not come to his knowledge.
Odesanya said, “That can’t be true; it is not to my knowledge. How did other excellencies (governors) move out of the place?”
Police and soldiers on Wednesday morning sealed off Sharks Stadium, venue of the planned convention and barricaded the Old Presidential Lodge, where party leaders like Governor Ayodele Fayose were lodging, preventing the party chieftains from attending the down-scaled convention.
