PDP Accuses INEC of Deception Over Promised Electoral Reforms

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria – The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has leveled accusations at the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, alleging deceit in its promises of technological advancements to improve the electoral process for the 2023 general elections.

While speaking in Abuja on Thursday, August 10, 2023, the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, expressed the party’s disappointment, stating that the PDP had initially trusted INEC’s commitment to ensuring a fair electoral platform.

Damagum recalled, “The free and transparent election of 2015 saw us concede power. But subsequent promises by the present administration, particularly regarding electoral reforms, have often been unfulfilled. The recent elections served as a stark reminder when we believed in the genuine intentions behind the promised technological improvements to the electoral process. Sadly, we felt deceived.”

He emphasised the PDP’s commitment to legal and constitutional processes in seeking redress for perceived injustices, attributing the current relative peace in the country to the party’s legalistic approach.

To highlight the PDP’s commitment to democracy, Damagum spoke about the PDP’s cooperation with smaller opposition parties, emphasizing how they have included them in decision-making processes at the National Assembly.

He noted, “Our democratic ethos is evident. Smaller parties have recently seen their members elected, and we’ve actively collaborated with them. For instance, during National Assembly elections, we conceded some deputy positions to them, demonstrating our inclusive approach.”

Umar Bature, the National Organising Secretary of the PDP, further stressed the party’s principle of inclusivity.

He highlighted the party’s support for marginalized groups, especially women and persons living with disabilities, and mentioned measures such as fee waivers for political participation.

Atta Barkindo, Executive Director of the Kukah Centre, expressed the center’s interest in collaborating with the PDP on strengthening internal democracy, promoting pluralism, and ensuring equity in the Nigerian political landscape.

The meeting also had in attendance other notable figures from both the PDP and the Kukah Centre.

Discussions like these are expected to continue to shape the future direction of Nigeria’s democracy.
