ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named a new management team for the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC.
The nomination of Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer is pending confirmation by the Senate. Simultaneously, Mr. Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu has immediately assumed the role of Secretary of the Commission.
The changes were announced in a statement on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, from Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.
According to the State House statement, Tinubu made these appointments adhering to the statutory requirements of the Act that establishes the ICPC.
This announcement follows the approval of the outgoing Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye’s request for pre-end of tenure leave that begins on November 4, 2023.
“In exercise of powers conferred on the President as established in Section 3(6) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, and in furtherance of the Renewed Hope mandate to reform key institutions and invigorate Nigeria’s war on corruption, President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of a new management team for the ICPC,” Chief Ngelale write.
“The president also noted the position of Secretary to the Commission doesn’t necessitate Senate confirmation. This has led to the immediate appointment of Oparaodu, who boasts over 30 years of legal experience and has held significant positions in the Rivers State Judicial Service Commission and as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council.
“Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, nominated to helm the ICPC, has a distinguished background in the legal arena. As the Attorney General of Jigawa State since September 2019, he’s launched many pivotal reforms.
“Dr. Aliyu’s academic accolades include Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate degrees in Law. He was also recently recognised as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria-designate this month,” the statement read further.
Ngelale, in his statement, conveyed the President’s message to the newly appointed team: “The President implores the new management team of the ICPC to always be above board as they discharge their duties without fear or favour concerning all matters before them.”
