LAGOS, Nigeria — Over 100 assailants launched a vicious attack on the Ipaja Police Station in Lagos on Monday, leading to a violent exchange of gunfire that left several attackers dead, authorities said.
The confrontation erupted in the early hours of Monday, May 27, 2024, creating widespread panic among residents in the surrounding neighbourhood.
Witnesses reported hearing intense and prolonged gunfire as police officers engaged the attackers.
“The gunfire was deafening. It felt like a war zone,” said one resident who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal.
In response to the attack, the Lagos State Police Command deployed numerous reinforcements to the area in a bid to restore order and ensure the safety of the community.
The heavy police presence continues with officers conducting patrols and setting up checkpoints.
While the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.
“We are investigating the incident thoroughly. Our priority is to understand what led to this attack and ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” said a police spokesperson.
The Nation reports that the attack had created significant anxiety among residents, many of whom feared for their safety as the gunfight raged on.
As the investigation continues, the Lagos State Police Command has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement officers.
