KIGALI, Rwanda – Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has etched his name deeper into the annals of Nigerian football history by surpassing legendary forward Segun Odegbami on the country’s all-time goal scorers’ list.
Osimhen achieved the feat during Nigeria’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda on Friday, netting his 24th goal for the Super Eagles.
The Napoli forward, currently on loan at Galatasaray, showcased his predatory instincts by converting a perfectly floated free-kick from Ademola Lookman.
Osimhen’s deft touch at the far post gave Nigeria the lead in the game, further cementing his status as one of the nation’s most prolific strikers.
With the goal, Osimhen moved into second place on Nigeria’s all-time scoring chart, surpassing Odegbami’s tally of 23 goals.
He now sets his sights on the late Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37 goals, a milestone that has stood as the benchmark for Nigerian strikers for decades.
Osimhen’s 24th goal came in his 39th appearance for the Super Eagles, highlighting his remarkable consistency and efficiency in front of goal.
The 26-year-old had equalled Odegbami’s record last November during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match.
This season, Osimhen has been in scintillating form for Galatasaray, scoring 20 goals and providing four assists in 20 Super Lig appearances.
Across all competitions, he has registered 26 goals and five assists in 30 games, underlining his importance to both club and country.
Osimhen’s rise to prominence has been meteoric, with his physicality, pace, and clinical finishing making him one of the most feared strikers in world football.
His latest achievement adds to a growing list of accolades, including being named African Footballer of the Year in 2023.
As Nigeria continues its quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Osimhen’s goals will be crucial to the team’s success.
