One Dead Following Truck Accident In Lagos

Tragedy struck on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, when an articulated truck conveying a 40 feet container crashed into Bus Rapid Transit demarcation at Oke-Riya inward Agric Bus stop, Ikorodu, Lagos, killing the driver on the spot.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the permanent secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, confirmed the incident.

The accident it was gathered was due to brake failure when the driver lost control leading to his death.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, “Upon arrival of the Agency’s LRTs to the scene of incident, an articulated truck conveying a 40ft container was discovered involved in a solitary accident at the above-mentioned location.

“The truck with 40ft container crashed on the main road, hitting the BRT demarcation and pedestrian bridge pillar, which effectively shut down the entire expressway.

“The trapped truck driver in the cabin who lost his life in the incident has been extricated with light duty rescue equipment in the ongoing operation and duly handed over to officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU.

“The agency’s sophisticated heavy-duty equipment are in the process of recovering the crashed articulated vehicle, while an agency’s flat body truck has equally been deployed for recovery of the 40 feet container.”

As a result of the incident, motorists plying the axis and those with the intent of traversing the area were diverted to alternative routes as directed by emergency responders during the recovery period.

Tragedy In Onitsha: 4 Street Hawkers Dead As Truck Crashes New Niger Bridge

At least four persons said to be hawkers around the Onitsha axis of the Niger bridge were on Thursday, October 27, 2022,  killed in an accident.

A source said the accident occurred when a truck moving from Onitsha to Asaba suddenly developed brake failure, causing it to run into the traffic, smashing vehicles.

Though a number of vehicles were involved in the accident, a source said hawkers in the area were the worst hit as they lost four persons.

The source said: “The truck lost its brake and ran into the traffic, smashing several vehicles.

“It smashed an Asaba-Onitsha bound Mitsubishi L300 at Onitsha, Niger Bridge. The truck failed brake and at least four persons, all hawkers were killed.”

As of the time of filing this report, the accident has not been confirmed by the Anambra command of the federal road safety commission.

TRAGEDY: 3 Crushed To Death By Truck In Ogun

A truck has crushed three travellers to death and injured others in an accident that occurred in the Obada area of Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

Our correspondent gathered that the fatal incident happened at about 07:15 am, around the Obada police station on the Lagos-Abeokuta highway.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun State, Florence Okpe, said five male adults were involved in the crash.

She said, “Two persons sustained injury and unfortunately, three persons were killed.

She added that the vehicles involved were a Volvo mini truck with no registration number and a taxi, a Nissan car marked with registration number AKM489ZY.

Okoe said, “The suspected cause of the crash was route violation on the part of the truck driver as it collided with the Nissan car.”

She said that the injured victims have been taken to a General hospital in Abeokuta for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased victims were deposited at the same hospital’s morgue.

Meanwhile, the Ogun FRSC Sector Commander, Ahmed Umar, while commiserating with the families of the crash victims, advised motorists to avoid route violation completely.

Umar added that safety is everybody’s business, especially in this season of high vehicular movement, stating that, “everyone should drive cautiously and obey traffic rules and regulations.”
