Midfielder Ogenyi Onazi says that Nigeria will have to step up their campaign in order to reach the second round of the World Cup.
The Super Eagles played a goalless draw with Iran in Curitiba on Sunday is what many saw as a poor performance from a team of their ability.
The Lazio player who was one of the bright lights in the encounter said that they need to go back and re-strategize.
“It wasn’t a bad game but we know we were supposed to do more, even though our opponents sat back to defend,” Onazi told Goal.
“We tried to get a goal but it was difficult for us,” he said.
However, the 21-year-old said that the team is optimistic dusting off Monday’s disappointment and play better in subsequent matches.
“The [team] spirit is still intact, we’re trying to encourage ourselves and look forward to the next game,” he said.
“We apologize [to Nigerians] for the draw but in the next game we’re going to step up and make sure we get the three points.
“We believe we will qualify for the next round,” he concluded.
Nigeria have a must win fixture against Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 21 before their final group match against Argentina on June 25.
