OSHOGBO, Nigeria – Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has dismissed widespread rumours of his death, affirming that he remains alive and in good health.
The ex-president made the statement on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, during the inauguration of the Old Garage/Oke Fia-Lameco Dual Carriageway in Osogbo, Osun State, an event marking the second anniversary of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.
Obasanjo, visibly energised and jocular, expressed his astonishment at the misinformation circulating on social media.
“I heard the rumour that I was dead. I saw it on the social media,” he remarked.
“I quickly told my children and my relations that it was not true and that I was alive. Those who want me dead, that is their wish, but God still keeps me alive.”
Condemning the motives behind such rumours, Obasanjo said, “Why would anyone wish me dead? Those who harbour such thoughts will not escape tragedy themselves. This kind of rumour is not only disturbing but shows the extent to which some people misuse technology. It is unacceptable.”

A Celebration of Osun’s Development
The event also provided an opportunity for Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to highlight his administration’s achievements in infrastructure development.
Addressing the audience, Adeleke outlined the strides made over the past two years, including the construction of over 120 kilometres of roads and the development of key flyover projects.
“My dear people of Osun State, our administration has constructed over 120 kilometres of roads across the state. Two major flyovers are also progressing to completion at Osogbo while works are progressing at the Ile-Ife flyover and Ilesa dualisation,” the governor said.
He also shared plans for the dualisation of the Odoori-Adeeke Road in Iwo, which will be completed in two phases, noting, “The first phase will reach the Post Office and the Oluwo Palace, while the second phase will take off from the Post Office to Adeeke Junction.”
Adeleke took pride in achieving these milestones without accruing debt, attributing the success to strategic financial management.
“I want our people to note for the record that for all our projects and programmes, we did not obtain any loan. We only block leakages in the state’s finances and employ local content to moderate project costs and enforce high standards,” he stated.
He reassured residents of his administration’s commitment to completing ongoing projects and addressing both infrastructural and social needs.
“For the second half of our government, I reassure all sons and daughters of Osun State that the government under my leadership will complete all ongoing projects. We will strike a balance between hard and soft infrastructure.”
As technology continues to shape the dissemination of information, both leaders’ remarks called for responsible use of digital platforms and a focus on progress over distraction.
