IMEKO AFON, Nigeria – A tragic incident has unfolded at Obada Idi-Emi High School in Ogun State, where a student identified only as Ariyo has reportedly died after receiving 162 strokes of the cane, allegedly administered by a teacher.
According to activist Adetoun, who shared the story on Instagram, the punishment was ordered after Ariyo was accused of breaking a dustbin in the classroom, an act the student allegedly joked was justified, as students’ contributions funded it.
The incident began when the teacher, angered by Ariyo’s remark, reportedly brought the matter to the school principal.
In response, the principal allegedly directed the teacher to discipline the student.
Acting on these instructions, the teacher reportedly delivered 162 strokes of the cane, during which Ariyo collapsed.
Witnesses, including staff members present, reportedly delayed seeking medical attention, and by the time Ariyo was taken to the hospital, he was pronounced dead.
Local law enforcement confirmed the incident, noting the situation initially stirred unrest within the community.
“The incident wanted to create tension, but we were able to douse it,” said a senior police officer on the scene.
While the Ogun State Police Command has yet to release an official statement, officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, with local authorities working to maintain calm.
As the community grieves the loss of a young life, calls for accountability and an investigation into corporal punishment in schools have grown louder.
