Obi of Onitsha Warns of Looming Catastrophe as Economic Hardship Bites Harder

ONITSHA, Nigeria — The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe Agbogidi, has voiced grave concerns over the deteriorating economic and security situation in Nigeria, warning that failure by the government to take swift and decisive action could lead to a national catastrophe.

The monarch made these remarks during the 23rd Ofala Festival at Ime Obi, Onitsha, in Anambra State, as he reflected on the mounting challenges facing the country.

Speaking candidly about the worsening state of affairs, Achebe lamented that instead of improving, Nigeria’s economic condition has become more dire over the past year, a trend he attributed to the government’s failure to address fundamental issues such as the high cost of living, rising insecurity, and increasing youth restiveness.

“At Ofala last year, I stated that the previous twelve months were marked by uncertainties occasioned by the aftermath of the general elections, further exacerbated by the continuing insecurity and the effects of the sudden removal of the fuel subsidy,” Achebe said.

“Unfortunately, the wellbeing of the polity has declined even more steeply in the last twelve months, leading to the ten-day national protest in August 2024 tagged Endbadgovernance.”

The monarch expressed concern over two major areas that have become particularly troubling for the country: the economy and security.

He highlighted the spiralling cost of living, widespread business closures, rising unemployment, and a growing sense of hopelessness and distrust in the government.

“The combined effects of the deteriorating economy and insecurity are leading to grave consequences,” Achebe warned.

“Several individuals and organizations, including Iba Gani Adams, The Patriots, League of Nigerian Columnists, Yoruba Council of Elders, Afenifere, and the Arewa Consultative Forum, have drawn attention to the looming catastrophe if no constructive action is taken to reverse the decline.”

He emphasised that these groups have repeatedly urged the government to prioritize its constitutional responsibility of ensuring the security and wellbeing of its citizens.

Achebe pointed to specific concerns that have been raised, including the need for the devolution of power, addressing the nexus between insecurity and agriculture, the impact of fuel prices on the cost of living, and tackling corruption and the ostentatious lifestyles of political leaders.

Achebe also reiterated his efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in the South East through his leadership of the Joint Body of South East Council of Traditional Rulers and representatives of Igbo Archbishops and Bishops.

He noted that the group has been working with the South East Governors’ Forum to encourage periodic meetings to discuss strategies for improving the region’s welfare.

However, the Obi of Onitsha voiced concerns about the rise of hate speech and crimes against Igbos, particularly in Lagos and the South West.

He described these trends as deeply troubling but assured that the Joint Body is continuing its work to foster values orientation and promote unity in Igbo land, an initiative launched last year.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic instability and insecurity, Achebe’s warning serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for the government to take decisive action to prevent further decline and restore stability to the nation.
