Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos, is under intense criticism from Yorubas for publicly embarrassing Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife, at the World Conference of Banking Institutes hosted by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) recently.
The video of the incident has gone viral. It shows the Oba of Lagos waving off the Ooni of Ife as the later made an attempt to greet the former.
According to the hierarchy of traditional rulers in Yoruba land, the Ooni of Ife is a first class monarch while the Oba of Lagos is a 2nd class monarch.

A number of Yorubas and other Nigerians have taken to social media to express outrage over this gesture by the monarch from Lagos.
So Oba of Lagos shunned Ooni of Ife at a public event. Tomorrow elders will say the young ones don't have respect. Respect begets respect

The wisdom and maturity displayed by the Ooni of Ife was second to none, without altering any word, Oba of Lagos looked stupid already. 😂😂

Amusing that people don't know history, throne of Oba of Lagos is NOT and has NEVER been under the Ooni of Ife or ANY other throne in d SW.

That video of Oba of Lagos being rude to the Ooni explains a lot. I'd always wondered why some Nigerians tend to be aloof/cold in public….

When an Oba of Lagos ordinary vassal king to Benin kingdom publicly disrespects an Ooni, just shows how Politics has intruded on tradition.

Sometimes extreme kindness and humility could be perceived as weakness, Ooni of Ife can do better, Oba of Lagos should be tamed.
