ABUJA, Nigeria – The newly sworn-in Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has promised to eradicate open grazing within the city limits of Abuja.
The announcement was made during his official address following his inauguration as the FCT Minister on Monday, August 21, 2023.
The former Governor of Rivers State emphasized that while he understands the need for herdsmen to rear their cattle, the beautified landscapes of the city aren’t the place for such activities.
“We have invested time, effort, and resources in the beautification of the city, and it’s not meant to be turned into grazing land,” Wike declared. He further explained, “There are ample spaces outside the city, which are more suitable for grazing. The primary purpose of the city’s grasses is aesthetics, not for feeding cattle.”
Drawing a vivid picture of his concerns, Wike said, “Imagine you are inside the [presidential] Villa and suddenly you spot a herd of 20,000 to 40,000 goats roaming freely. Think of the impression that would leave on foreigners and visitors. It’s just not appropriate for the image of our capital.”
On a related note, the Minister also addressed the increasing issue of illegal markets sprouting up within the city.
He acknowledged the economic hardships many are facing but emphasized that this shouldn’t be an excuse to break the law or create nuisances in the city.
“We recognize that times are tough, but it’s essential to operate within legal boundaries. Seeing traders huddled under umbrellas beneath trees, cluttering the sidewalks, poses not just aesthetic concerns but security risks as well. We are committed to ensuring order in the city,” Wike asserted.
The Minister’s stance on both open grazing and illegal markets underlines a commitment to preserving the aesthetic and functional essence of the Federal Capital Territory.
As the administration gets underway, it remains to be seen how these policies will be implemented and received by the affected communities.
