Geneneral Gowon who was the special guest of honour at the event said, “I hope you will live up to that very good reputation and ensure that you maintain the good name of this university. Rest assured that nobody can change the name of this university from what it is; so my congratulations and I wish you well in life.”

The name of the university was changed in 2012 by President Goodluck Jonathan. The decision met resistance as stakeholders rejected the decision.
