ABUJA, Nigeria – The lead counsel of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mike Ozekhome, has appealed to the Department of State Services, DSS, to allow his client to see new medical doctors.
In a letter written to the DSS on Monday, June 19, 2023, Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), stated that Kanu’s former doctor was out of the country, and the IPOB leader was due for a surgical operation on his left ear at an undetermined date.
According to the letter, the new doctors, Uche Ukwuije and David Ukoha, have confirmed their readiness for an “initial interface” with Kanu.
However, they need to personally meet with him for a formal agreement as it would be their first meeting.
Ozekhome’s letter reads: “The said doctors need to personally meet with our client for a formal agreement since he would be meeting them for the first time ever. It is against the backdrop of the foregoing that we respectfully request that the herein-named medical doctors be allowed access to our client for a formal engagement meeting.”
This request comes amidst a family dispute over Kanu’s legal representation.
Kanu’s younger brother, Kanunta, has recently stated that Ozekhome’s and fellow lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor’s services are no longer required.
According to him, Ozekhome had previously blocked doctors sent by the family from conducting a medical examination on Kanu.
