ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called on Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, to respect the recent Supreme Court ruling that declared his tenure invalid.
The NLC warned that any defiance of the court’s decision would be a serious violation of the rule of law.
In a statement signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the congress condemned Abure’s rejection of the Supreme Court judgment issued on April 4, which ruled that his tenure had expired and invalidated the leadership of his National Working Committee.
The NLC described Abure’s continued assertions that he remains the legitimate leader of the Labour Party as “utter impunity” and “a reckless assault against the grain of constitutionality.”
The statement further warned that such actions undermine the nation’s legal institutions and should not be tolerated.
“We call on all Nigerian workers and members of the Labour Party to remain vigilant. We will not tolerate the antics of inconsequential characters like Abure, and we are prepared to resist any attempt to subvert the rule of law and destabilise the country’s legal processes,” the statement read.
The NLC also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling by removing Abure’s name and the names of his committee members from all official platforms and records.
In addition, the congress urged the remaining members of the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to appoint an interim leadership and convene a Special National Convention in accordance with the LP’s constitution and the consent judgment from the court.
The NLC also appealed to security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service (SSS), to ensure the enforcement of the Supreme Court’s ruling.
“By this communication, we urge every worker in Nigeria, all genuine members of the Labour Party, and all lovers of democracy to be on standby to peacefully repossess all offices of the Labour Party nationwide. The leadership of the NLC Political Commission and other concerned Labour Party stakeholders will issue necessary directives to this effect,” the statement concluded.
