KWARA, Nigeria — A quiet night was shattered on Saturday, May 20, 2023, as unidentified gunmen laid siege on the peaceful communities of Gure and Boriya in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, stirring chaos and fear among the residents.
Armed with dangerous weapons, the unknown assailants descended upon the communities, discharging bullets indiscriminately into the night and throwing local inhabitants into a maelstrom of panic.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported from the terrifying encounter, according to local sources.
In swift response to the brazen act of violence, military personnel have since been dispatched to the affected areas, instilling a sense of cautious calm and working to prevent further disturbances.
Yakubu Danlasi-Salihu, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, on Sunday, May 21, 2023, voiced his condemnation of the horrifying attacks, pledging the government’s commitment to prevent such unfortunate incidents from recurring.
The Speaker, who also represents the Ilesha/Gwanara state constituency, said, “My heart is heavy in the wake of recent attacks that have occurred in some of our communities. We understand the pain and suffering that these attacks have caused the affected individuals and families.”
“We want to assure you,” Danlasi-Salihu continued, “that the government is taking prompt action to avert any future occurrences. We also condemn these attacks in the strongest terms possible.”
Promising swift justice for the perpetrators, he added, “We are doing everything within our power to ensure that those responsible for these attacks are apprehended and brought to justice. We understand the importance of ensuring the safety and security of our citizens.”
Danlasi-Salihu ended his statement with an affirmation of the government’s resolve, saying, “We will not rest until we have put in place measures that will prevent any future occurrences of such attacks.”
