NIGERIA – The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, have moved up one spot to 39th position in the latest rankings released by the Federation of International Football Association, FIFA, on Thursday, June 29, 2023.
The three-time African champions gained 5.68 points, leading to their ascent from the position they occupied in April.
This progression is seen as a boost to the team’s morale ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
Coach Jose Peseiro’s men now sit above notable teams including Norway, which boasts the talents of star striker Erling Haaland, as well as African rivals such as the Black Stars of Ghana, the Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire, and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
The Super Eagles’ rise in the rankings can be attributed to their recent victory against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone.
In a closely contested match in Monrovia, the Super Eagles emerged victorious with a 3-2 scoreline, securing their place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
In the continental landscape, the Atlas Lions of Morocco hold the mantle as the top-ranked African team.
The Teranga Lions of Senegal and the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia follow closely in second and third positions respectively.
The Desert Foxes of Algeria and the Pharaohs of Egypt round off the top five teams in Africa.
The Super Eagles’ climb in the rankings reflects the team’s positive performance and it is expected that they will aim to maintain and improve on this trajectory in subsequent matches and tournaments.
The team’s dedicated fan base in Nigeria and across the continent will be looking forward to more victories and a strong showing in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
