ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian federal government, through the Ministry of Interior, has declared the upcoming Friday and Monday as public holidays in celebration of Easter.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and communicated to the public via a statement released by Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.
Easter, a cornerstone of Christian faith commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, is also seen by the Nigerian government as a time that promotes the universal values of love, forgiveness, and compassion.
These virtues, according to Minister Tunji-Ojo, play a critical role in enhancing social cohesion, national unity, and the socio-economic development of Nigeria.
The Minister’s message extended beyond the announcement of the public holidays, seizing the moment to encourage all Nigerians, especially Christians, to internalize and manifest these virtues in their daily lives.
By doing so, they contribute significantly to reducing conflicts, fostering unity, and encouraging cooperation across diverse communities within the nation.
In addition to the spiritual and social reflections, Tunji-Ojo called on citizens to engage in acts of charity and generosity during this period.
Such actions, he noted, are vital for alleviating the conditions of the less privileged among us and embodying the true spirit of Easter.
While extending his wishes for a happy and blissful Easter celebration to Christians both at home and abroad, the Minister also implored all Nigerians to support the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He emphasised the government’s commitment to driving sustainable development and ensuring prosperity reaches every corner of the nation.
