Nigerian Soccer Star Okocha Opens Up on Adopting Turkish Citizenship, Muslim Name

LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigerian soccer legend Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, who played for Turkish club Fenerbahce from 1996 to 1998, has opened up about his decision to adopt Turkish citizenship and a unique adopted name, Muhammed Yavuz, during his time with the team.

In an exclusive interview with Hurriyet on Monday, April 24, 2023, Okocha expressed gratitude for his warm reception while playing for Fenerbahce. “I spent two years in Turkey, and it was a really good time for me. People loved me very much. Our fans were amazing,” he said.

Okocha, who moved to Fenerbahce from German club Frankfurt in a €1 million deal, explained the reasons behind accepting the offer of Turkish citizenship.

“As for this kind of offer, I received Turkish citizenship without thinking. I didn’t want to change my religion, but I got this name because I knew that Muslims loved the name, Muhammad,” Okocha was quoted as saying.

The former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder also revealed the inspiration for his chosen Turkish name.

“I accepted this name because it’s very sacred and very important for Muslims. Our facility manager was Yavuz. He was very sympathetic, he would make us laugh a lot. I asked him and put my lineage Yavuz. So my name was Muhammed Yavuz,” he shared.
