The Nigeria Customs Service, has on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, intercepted $8.6 million from a passenger at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to secure the country, and bring corruption to it’s bearest minimum before leaving office.
In order to achieve that, he appointed all the Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, and comptroller general of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ahmed Ali to assist the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, ICPC and other security agencies in fighting insecurity and corruption in the country.
The money was wrapped in large brown envelopes and were to be loaded into an aircraft.
Hameed Ali, the customs comptroller-general, at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, disclosed that the cash was discovered in a car.
The vehicle is owned by the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, NAHCO.
Ali said the driver of the vehicle and a staff of NAHCO are in custody for alleged money laundering.
“From the day we seized this money, no bank has come to claim ownership.
“But our investigation will reveal the mystery behind the owners,” Ali said.
