MENLO PARK, USA – In a significant boost to the creative industry, Nigerian content creators can now monetise their work on Facebook and Instagram, following an announcement by Meta on Thursday, June 27, 2024.
This development ends the longstanding exclusion of Nigerian-based creators from earning ad revenue on these platforms.
Prior to this update, content creators in Nigeria were ineligible for Facebook monetization unless they managed their pages from an eligible country.
The change marks a new era for Nigerian creators, allowing them to generate income from in-stream ads, live ads, ads on reels, bonuses, and subscriptions directly through Facebook.
In 2023, Meta introduced “Ads on Reels,” a performance-based monetization program, in countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, and South Korea.
The success of this programme paved the way for its expansion to Nigeria, providing local creators with the same lucrative opportunities.
This move follows an earlier commitment by Meta in March when Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs at Meta, visited Nigeria.
During his visit, Clegg highlighted the company’s plans to extend monetisation features to Nigerian creators.
“Monetisation won’t be limited to just Instagram. Nigerian creators eligible to use our monetisation products will be able to also monetise on Facebook as well,” Meta stated in March.
The company emphasised its dedication to rolling out these features swiftly, ensuring that creators in Nigeria could start benefiting as early as June.
For many Nigerian creators, this update opens new financial possibilities and validates the efforts of countless individuals who have built substantial followings and high-quality content on these platforms.
With Meta’s announcement, the Nigerian content creation landscape is set to experience a transformative shift, fostering growth and innovation in the digital space.
