IJEBU-ODE, Nigeria – Oluwaseun Kuforiji, a Nigerian fashion designer, has been certified by Guinness World Records (GWR) as the new record holder for the longest sewing marathon.
Kuforiji achieved the feat by hand-sewing 22 items over 106 hours and 55 minutes, surpassing previous attempts and setting a new benchmark in the fashion industry.
The “sew-a-thon” took place from 22 to 26 January 2025 in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, and aimed to promote craftsmanship and creativity in fashion.
In a blog post, GWR announced, “The longest sewing marathon is 106 hr 55 min 20 sec, and was achieved by Oluwaseun Kuforiji (Nigeria) in Ijebuode, Ogun, Nigeria, from 22 January to 26 January 2025.”
Kuforiji expressed his joy and pride in the achievement via Instagram, describing the attempt as an “incredible” journey that showcased his perseverance and dedication to his craft.
“Officially a Guinness World Record Holder! 106 hours, 55 minutes, and 20 seconds of non-stop sewing, needle and thread in hand, passion in my heart,” he wrote.
“From crafting a full Agbada in the first 6 hours to completing 18 outfits, this journey has been nothing short of incredible.
This is more than just a record; it’s a testament to perseverance, skill, and the power of believing in one’s craft.”
Kuforiji also thanked Guinness World Records for the recognition and expressed gratitude to his supporters.
“Many thanks to @guinnessworldrecords for the recognition, and to everyone who supported me on this journey. Victory is ours!” he added.
Before Kuforiji’s achievement, no one had held the Guinness World Record for the longest sewing marathon. However, his success follows several attempts by other Nigerian fashion designers.
In July 2023, Edmond Peace attempted to set the record by sewing for 170 hours but suspended the attempt after a few hours. In December 2024, Ibikunle Olamide, a Port Harcourt-based fashion designer, also attempted to break the record by sewing for 100 hours.
