UYO, Nigeria — Ademola Lookman scored twice, and Victor Osimhen added a third, as Nigeria secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifying campaign.
The Super Eagles’ win at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Saturday, September 7, 2024, placed them at the top of Group D, a sharp rebound after their last meeting with Benin ended in a 2-1 defeat during the World Cup qualifiers in June.
Lookman, who has been in fine form, opened the scoring with a stunning solo run and strike in first-half stoppage time, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Osimhen, the Napoli striker, doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 79th minute with a powerful volley from a pinpoint cross by Wilfried Ndidi.
Lookman capped off the impressive display with a header in the 84th minute, finishing off a well-placed ball from Moses Simon.
The Super Eagles controlled much of the match from the opening whistle, maintaining high possession and pressing Benin’s defense.
Their dominance was reflected in both the scoreline and the match statistics, with Benin struggling to create any meaningful chances throughout the game.
The victory puts Nigeria on top of Group D with three points, ahead of Rwanda and Libya, who played out a 1-1 draw. Nigeria will face Rwanda next on Tuesday, September 10, while Benin looks to bounce back in their clash against Libya on the same day.
Lookman and Osimhen Shine
Lookman’s brace was the highlight of the game, with the forward showing his skill and composure to score in both halves.
His performance, coupled with Osimhen’s trademark clinical finish, showcased the attacking prowess of the Super Eagles.
Osimhen’s goal was particularly impressive, as he connected perfectly with Ndidi’s cross to score from a difficult angle.
Benin Struggles to Respond

Benin’s defense was overwhelmed by Nigeria’s pace and creativity, particularly on the wings, where Lookman and Chukwueze posed constant threats.
